You Don’t Need to Earn Rest..
One for the road..
Hey there,
Can I ask you something? When was the last time you sat down and rested without feeling guilty? Not folding laundry while watching TV. Not answering emails from the couch. Not scrolling social media while mentally planning next week's meals. Actually rested.
If you're struggling to think of an answer, you're not alone.
One of the most common things I hear from women is:
"I just need to get a few more things done first."
The problem is that "a few more things" somehow turns into a never-ending list. The dishes. The lunches. The appointments. The emails. The groceries. The random school form you forgot about until 9:42 PM…and suddenly another week has gone by without giving yourself permission to stop.
The truth is, many of us have been taught that rest is something we earn. Once the house is clean. Once the kids are settled. Once the work is done. Once everything is caught up, but here's the problem... Everything is never caught up. There will always be another load of laundry. Another appointment. Another task. Another person who needs something from you. If rest only happens when everything is finished, rest never happens, and your nervous system pays the price. When we're stuck in survival mode, our brains become incredibly focused on productivity and problem-solving. We start believing our worth is tied to what we accomplish. We feel uncomfortable sitting still. We feel guilty saying no. We convince ourselves that if we could just get more done, we'd finally feel better.
But burnout isn't usually solved by doing more. Burnout is often the result of doing too much for too long without enough recovery. Your nervous system needs moments of safety. Moments where there isn't a problem to solve. Moments where you're allowed to simply exist. Not because you've earned it.
Because you're human.
This Week's Burnout Bar Reminder
Rest is not a reward.
Rest is a requirement.
Try This This Weekend
The next time you sit down to relax and your brain starts listing everything you "should" be doing...
Pause. Take a breath.
And ask yourself: "If someone I loved was this tired, would I tell them to keep pushing?"
Notice what comes up.
One for the Road ☕
You don't need permission to rest.
You don't need to justify it.
You don't need to finish everything first.
The dishes can wait.
The emails can wait.
Your nervous system has been working hard all week.
Maybe this weekend, you let it exhale.
